Some projects become turning points in a company’s history.

This custom poolscape in Mokena, Illinois 60448 was one of those projects for Scott Flanagan Landscape.

At the time, Scott had recently completed his Horticulture degree from the University of Illinois and was transitioning from lawn maintenance and planting projects into larger landscape design and outdoor living installations. While previous projects had helped build experience, this was one of the first opportunities to create a complete outdoor environment built around a client’s lifestyle rather than a single landscape feature.

As with every project, we started by listening.

The homeowners wanted a backyard that felt like a destination. They envisioned a space where family and friends could gather around the pool, enjoy evenings by the fire, and relax beneath a shaded structure while listening to the sound of moving water.

Rather than approaching the project as a swimming pool installation, we viewed it as a landscape design challenge.

The most successful poolscapes are not defined by the pool alone. They are created when the pool, patio, plantings, structures, and gathering spaces all work together as a cohesive outdoor living environment.

The custom inground pool became the centerpiece of the design, but it was only one part of the overall vision.

Surrounding the pool, we installed a Belgard Mega Arbel brick paver patio. The natural stone appearance of Mega Arbel provided the upscale appearance the homeowners wanted while creating durable outdoor living spaces that could withstand years of use. The patio was carefully laid out to support multiple activities, including dining, lounging, and entertaining.

One of the most distinctive features of the project is the custom fabricated iron pergola.

Unlike traditional wood structures, the welded iron pergola created a dramatic architectural statement within the landscape. Integrated waterfalls cascade from the structure, combining steel, stone, and water into a feature that immediately captures attention while adding movement and sound throughout the backyard.

The outdoor fireplace added another layer of functionality.

By incorporating fire into the design, the homeowners gained a gathering space that could be enjoyed beyond the traditional swimming season. Even on cool evenings, the fireplace creates a natural destination within the landscape and encourages people to spend more time outdoors.

Privacy plantings were incorporated throughout the project to soften the hardscape elements and create a more comfortable environment. As these plantings matured, they helped transform the backyard into a secluded retreat while adding seasonal color, texture, and interest.

The success of this project extended beyond the finished landscape.

Over the following decade, Scott Flanagan Landscape completed dozens of custom poolscapes throughout Mokena and the surrounding southwest suburbs. As demand increased, we invested in additional resources and expanded our capabilities to better control project schedules, quality, and communication.
